Traditional kitchens in 1980's and 1990's homes that were remodeled to work better for the entire family, and look like it really belongs. "Traditional" style includes the 18th and 19th Centuries (1700-1900), French Empire influence, Victorian, Eastlake, Prairie, and Craftsman styles.

High Style and High Function1980's Home. The entire family loves to prepare meals together, but the original kitchen crowded two people in the kitchen at the same time.  DESIGNER'S SOLUTIONS: The dysfunctional island was replaced with a unique peninsula that contains the downdraft cooktop and a generous preparation sink, with ample countertops for three or more people, plus a serving area.  The new kitchen was designed with a separate baking preparation area, cleanup area, and more than five times the pantry storage than the original kitchen had.

Cheerful and Convenient Craftsman1990's Home. The original kitchen didn't match the "Contemporary Craftsman" look of the home, and it lacked the convenience that the homeowners wanted.  DESIGNER'S SOLUTIONS: A custom computer desk in the adjacent family room, freeing up space for pull-out pantries.  The original pantry became part of a new powder room, tucked under the stairway.  A custom cherry "bonnet" was installed over the island, to visually lower the 10-foot ceiling.   (See additional areas of this project in Traditional Bathrooms and Living Rooms.)

Gracious, Elegant Entertaining1980's Home. The renovation included not only the kitchen, but the family room, butler's pantry, "phone booth," and rear hallway, a total of 968 square feet, with nine 45-degree walls.  DESIGNER'S SOLUTIONS: One exterior wall was moved, to make the eating area larger and provide a better view of Mt. Hood.  Several interior walls were moved, to allow space for an integrated freezer, an integrated refrigerator, and a wine room.   This project was the recipient of an HBA Excellence Award, and was featured in a cookbook by a professional chef.
