CONTEMPORARY BATHROOMS: CLEAN LINES AND BOLD STATEMENTS

All of the homeowners wanted contemporary styling, however they defined it: calming and serene, whimsical, sophisticated, or bold and exciting.  Contemporary (Modern) Styles cover 1960 to present, and include Frank Lloyd Wright's Usonian, Minimalist and Post-Modern architecture.

"Let the flow of space and light create much of your decoration, without the confusion of unnecessary ornamentation." (Home Decorating Reviews Magazine; author unknown)

D-I-Y Disaster Becomes Delightful Dazzler1970's Home. Original home was "remodeled" by the previous owners.  DESIGNER'S SOLUTIONS: A new bathroom was created by combining the original bathroom, walk-in closet, and powder room, with a luxurious two-person shower, two-person whirlpool tub, and generous individual lavatories with lots of storage.  To maintain a tight budget, the homeowners did a good percentage of the work, including setting all tile.  The homeowners' favorite colors were used. A "terrycloth towel" faux finish was applied to the walls.

European Influence for a Rural Setting1970's Townhome. These bathrooms had never been updated.  New homeowners wanted a custom contemporary European theme for every room.  DESIGNER'S SOLUTIONS:   (1) Custom sandblasted art to enclose the steam shower, and a glass pedestal lavatory to enhance the sophistication of the main-floor guest bathroom.  Original artwork by Michael Bedard ("Sitting Ducks") adds a whimsical accent to complete the "seashore boardwalk" theme. (2)  Dark gray and black glass "liner" tiles and lipstick-red accessories accent this bathroom adjoining the husband's home office.  The mirror-mounted light fixtures appear to be a perfect circle when viewed from an angle. (3)  Two new french doors were added during renovation of this bathroom, to access the spa room (see Home Additions), to access the six-person sauna room (not shown).  Daylight floods this lower-floor area with the creative use of glass blocks, and colorful glass tiles add visual pizzazz.

Creating a Private Island Harbor1970's Townhome. The hard-working homeowners, new owners of the 1970's townhome (see above), love to visit the Pacific Islands yearly, and wanted a daily reminder of fond memories. DESIGNER'S SOLUTIONS: "Chamesson" limestone resembles undulating sand dunes; blocks were shaped into the custom lavatory bowls, like tidepools on the "floating island" countertop. The couple loves bathing with their "pet" dolphin every day!

Powder Room With Pizzazz! The homeowners fell in love with this colorful custom glass vessel lavatory.  They didn't know how it could be incorporated into their tiny powder room, but wanted it to have a "Wow!" factor.  DESIGNER'S SOLUTIONS: A custom glass countertop was created to support the vessel lavatory bowl (back-lit by halogen stair lights from below).  Mirrors were installed from the countertop to the ceiling, with "torch" light fixtures, and the walls were textured with paper and real leaves before the deep metallic green paint was applied. This 35-square-foot space won two local and regional awards, and three national awards.
