Fantastic article, Diane, and oh so true! Before I became a designer myself, I hired other designers for all of these reasons and more.
Other things that professional designers bring to the table, of course, include a wealth of tried and tested resources, not just products, but people, in the form of contractors, artisans, fabricators, and manufacturers of all sorts. We bring experience working with all of these allied professionals, and typically a team approach that is faster and more efficient because people get to know how each other works, which results in a better end result for the client, that is also more cost efficient.
It's really sad how people think they can save money by doing things themselves, but the reality is that on the whole, our industry has not done a particularly good job of informing the public exactly what we do and why they ought to hire us instead of trying to wing it alone. Your article is a great step in the right direction.

The other thing the (good) designer will do for you is go to bat for you when things aren’t quite what you expected. I’m speaking from experience as a former 2-time clent of Diane’s… on at least 3 occasions that I recall during these projects something was being built which we weren’t quite happy about and she jumped right in as our advocate and got the (sub)contractor to fix it at no cost to us. You need someone by your side in this sometimes un-fun process of remodeling.
